The Abia State Chapter of United Niger Delta Youths for Peace and Development was inaugurated recently in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, with youths from the 9 oil producing states in attendance. In an address presented by the Abia State Chairman of the United Niger Delta Youths for Peace and Development, Comrade Angel Njoku Ukah said that regrettably due to unattended frustrations, some youths of the Niger Delta region took to arms struggle which escalated and almost collapsed the nation. According to him it was the result of youths disenchantment that resulted to antisocial vices like armed robbery, cultism, pipeline vandalization and kidnapping, which made the region a high risk area. He emphasized on the need to involve the youths in meaningful participation in activities like sports, arts, music, volunteer works, skill acquisition, politics and other social activities. Comrade Ukah said, empowering the youths in the Niger Delta region is very important as this will give them the leeway to participate meaningfully in the society.In his words “the youths today constitute the energetic, creative and the largest percentage of our population and any radical change in the youths will ensure the growth of the economy” .He said that the youths of the Niger Delta region should be developed and not only remembering them during elections when they are used as thugs and dumped thereafter. In his words “Investment in the life of the youth is a live wire in the development of any nation, socially, economically, politically and youths who benefit from such government programmes shy away from anti government activities and I believe that President Buhari will listen to our plea for peaceful developmental initiatives in the Niger Delta region through skill acquisition and development to help reverse the negative attitude of the youths.” He thanked the Chairman, Niger Delta Development Commission, Senator Victor Ndoma Egba and the Managing Director, Obong Nsima Ekere for their efforts in transforming Niger Delta youths through skill acquisition programme. In his opening remark at the occasion the National President of UNDYPD, Barr.(Pst) Godspower Nta, chronicled the origin of United Niger Delta Youths for Peace and Development as having metamorphosed from the Union of Niger Delta Youths Council(UNDYC), conceived and formed by eminent Niger Delta sons and daughters, including Senator David O.Dafione, Chief Eke Horsefall, late Dr. Ime S. Umanah and late Comrade John Israel. According to him, the aim was to create a peaceful region and that the peace being enjoyed today in the Niger delta region was as a result of remarkable efforts of the Union. He said “UNDYPD is about development and we are empowering youths through peace; because we cannot have development without peace.As our main objective, we started youths empowerment towards self reliance because until you have value in life; you amount to nothing and this led us to start skill acquisition training with 800 people at Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibom state” UNDYPD is the platform people have been are looking for he said. He advised executive members of Abia state chapter to UNDYPD take their work serious and happily relayed a message from NDDC chairman expressing willingness to send trainees to the skill acquisition centre in Ikot Ekpene. In his speech, His Kingship Eze Amb. Iheanyichukwu Nwokenna, Oba 1 of the Great Ekeoba, who was the Royal Father of the day, advised the Abia state chapter to be peaceful and achieve her objectives so that it will not be relegated to the background in the pursuit of what rightly belongs to them. He advised them to always go for peace as peace is better than war. Eze Innocent Nwaigwe of Okaiuga-Alike Kingdom in Ohuhu clan of Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State in his remarks applauded the decision of the youths of the Niger-Delta region to form a group that would address the issue of peace but advised that nobody should be dropped when it becomes juicy. “Members of the association should not go for crumbs because the crumbs cannot solve your problems rather go for the real things that belong to you and carry everybody along. There is a correlation between peace and development because you cannot have development in the absence of peace” he concluded. Notable Nigerians recognized at the occasion as Grand Patrons included the 2015 All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) Abia State Governorship candidate, Dr. Alex Otti, who was ably represented by Hon. Luke Ukara Onyeani, member representing Arochukwu State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly,His Kingship, Eze Amb. Iheanyichukwu Nwokenna, Sir Marc Wabara, Chief Chris Nkwonta,Dr. David Onuoha(Bourdex),Dr. Nyerere Chinenye Anyim and Barr. George Ero. Those recognized as Patrons included Dr. U.N.Onwuka, Hon.Kalu Kalu Ulu, Mr. Ogbuefi Igwe Gideon Elekwa, Tony Ogbuagu, Rt.Hon.Sir Cosmos Ndukwe and Barr. Kennedy Emeka Adiele. The National President of UNDYPD, Barr (Pst) Godspower Nta inaugurated the Abia State Execuitve Committee headed by Abia State Chairman Prince (Comrade) Angel Njoku Ukah who later inaugurated the Executive Members of the 17 Local Government Areas in Abia State after taking oath of allegiance to be faithful and loyal to UNDYPD. In an exclusive chat with Bishop Nelson Etigwe, the General Overseer of Shiloh International Church, and an Executive member of the association said that UNDYPD is open to the young and the young at heart with the good intention of refocusing the mindset of the youths of the Niger Delta region in particular and Nigeria in general. He said that the good morals which Nigerian youths were hitherto known for had eluded us and unfortunately replaced with violence and other immoral acts that are detrimental to the growth and development of the country. He advised every youth in Nigeria to embrace peace, without which, there will be no meaningful development.
