Partners for Electoral Reform, a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has flayed the erection of a statue of South Africa’s President, Jacob Zuma, in Owerri by Imo Governor, Mr Rochas Okorocha. Condemning the action, the organisation’s Chairman, Mr Ezenwa Nwagwu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that Zuma’s legacy had not attained the level of a statue being erected in his honour in Imo. The statue is believed to cost N520 million to produce and erect. “Okorocha’s action is not well thought-out; I think the visit of Zuma is pure liquid corruption Transparency International defines corruption as the abuse of public office for private gains. “Zuma came to sign MoU with Rochas Foundation, a personal philanthropic initiative of his, not that of the government of Imo. “Only God knows what the intention of Okorocha is in patronising Zuma the way he has done,’’ he said. According to Nwagwu, there is not one initiative of the South African Government in the whole of Imo, not a road, not a hospital, not a school built by South Africa Government. “So, on what basis are we expending the resources of the state on such a statue? If you ask, he will tell you it is not the state’s money. “Alright, where is his factory? Let him show us the factory with which he generates the money with which he will host the president of another country as the governor of a state.” The activist said that the action diminished and brought pogrom to not just people of Imo but Nigerians. He said that South Africans were making mockery of Nigerians because their Supreme Court had called Zuma to go and face corruption charges. He said that if the governor had built a statue for his own father, it might have been more pardonable than bringing a Zuma who had contributed absolutely nothing to Nigeria. According to him, if anything, it is South Africans that should be celebrating Nigerians because of our contributions toward dismantling apartheid in their country. Nwagwu said that instead of South Africa honouring Nigeria’s past presidents and leaders who helped them to dismantle apartheid in their country, “it is a Nigerian governor honouring South Africa’s president’’. He said that if it was the statue of the late sage, Nelson Mandela, it may have made a better impression on Nigerians, Africa and the world. According to him, the one Okorocha just did with Zuma had no basis because it is not a well deserved honou

Hip hop recording artist M.I Abaga, is filing a lawsuit against rapper Nas, for delivering a verse not worthy of his bill. According to the lawsuit, M.I paid $50,000 for a verse from Nas but the American rapper did not deliver. Choc City complained about a lack of lyricism and talent in the verse that Nas sent. Although in the court papers he was called ‘a highly respected lyricist in the music industry’, Choc City claim that they requested Nas to re-record the verse three years ago but he has failed to do so. It is majorly for this reason that Chocolate City is suing Nas and Ronnie Goodman of Mass Appeal Records. Filed in New York State Supreme Court, the suit claims that Nas failed to mention ‘M.I, Chocolate City, Nigeria, Queens, New York—NAS’s hometown—, Mandela, Trayvon Martin, and the struggles of Africans and African Americans,’ as they had initially agreed upon.
Pope Francis will declare 33 martyrs and 2 others from Brazil, Mexico, Spain and Italy, as the Catholic Church’s new saints on Sunday at a Canonization Mass in Rome’s St. Peter’s Square. They include 30 so-called “Matryrs of Natal”, including priests and lay people, who were killed in 1645 in a wave of anti-Catholic persecution by Dutch Calvinists in Natal, Brazil. Another group of 3 indigenous martyrs from Mexico – Cristobal, Antonio and Juan – known as the “Child Martyrs of Tlaxcala” will also be canonized. Aged between 12 and 13, the children were among the first indigenous Catholics of Mexico who were killed between 1527 and 1529 for refusing to renounce their faith and return to their ancient traditions. Among the new saints will also be two European priests. One of them is Spanish Piarist Father, Manuel Míguez González, the founder of the Daughters of the Divine Shepherdess, or the Calasanzian Institute. He died in 1925. The other is Italian Cappuchin priest, Fr. Angelo da Acri, who died in 1739. Source: Vatican Radio
Nollywood actor Emeka Ike has said that he’ll fight, with everything he has, to clear himself of the wife beater image his ex wife has labelled him, as he isn’t one. He said this while speaking to Punch, adding that his divorce is illegal, as neither him nor his lawyer was at the court to sign the divorce papers. He said: The court dissolved my marriage illegally; I want people to get it right. For you to dissolve a marriage, the man and his lawyer must be present in court to sign some documents. Ask them, was either my lawyer or myself present in court on that day? Is it possible to say the marriage has been dissolved? My wife says that I am a wifebeater but the same woman two years ago in church during counselling, wrote it down that I am a caring man who is selfless and loves his family. She wrote that I love her and my lawyer still has the written note. She made this statement at The Redeemed Assemblies of God church in Magodo, Lagos. Can I possess all these and still beat my wife? Six months later, she began to sing another tune and I know she was advised by some people that it was the only way to leave the marriage. As to why he has refused to sign the divorce papers, Emeka Ike said: The reason why I have not signed the papers is because of the blackmail involved and my name that has been tarnished. She is spoiling my name; I would fight to clear myself of being called a wife beater with everything I have. I hate being referred to as a wife-beater because I am not one. Any man that does that does not deserve to be called a father or a man because you are stronger than the woman, He said his children are scared of his ex wife, their mother, and do not want to see her. My children do not want to see their mother. When my daughter heard she would be taken to Lagos to be with her mother, she was crying profusely because she did not want to go to meet her. The children are scared of her. People have been asking me how my children have been coping with this whole drama but the truth is that they don’t want to see her. If you threaten our daughter that she would go to Lagos to meet her mother, she would cry and do everything you want her to do in the house just because she doesn’t want to see her. Now my children are suffering emotionally, I even had to pay their matron double the money she asked for to make my children comfortable so they don’t really miss their mother. I am not happy that my daughter does not have a role model. The children are really irritated by their mother. I have a lot of evidence of child abuse against her but I am waiting for the right time to arrest her. Even in court, her son testified against her. She has tried to use the press against me by saying that I am a wife-beater but I have never touched her in my life. This is a real story and not a joke. Her best TV station is the criminal investigation channel; she stays up till 4am to watch the channel for over five years. At first, I used to enjoy watching it with her. She watched the programmes about women who killed their husbands, children, relatives. How would you wake up by 4am and not see your wife on the bed only to go downstairs and see her watching that station as if she is taking notes. I had to ask her if she wanted to kill somebody with the way she watched the station but she just switched off the television, went to her room and slept. This is the story of my life. This is a woman whom I brought out of a one room apartment she was living with her mother, the other room was covered with zinc but I built a two-bedroomed apartment for them. I went to her village and built a three-bedroomed apartment for her. I trained her from secondary school to Master’s degree level. Is this how she is supposed to pay me back? No one is looking at all this but they would go online to say that I am bitter. Some men suffer like me but they died for nothing. That is why I dedicated my award to all the men that lost their lives to the women they loved. Concerning the photo of him and a South African lady he is rumoured to be dating circulating the internet, Emeka Ike said: People saw a picture of me and a lady together and they have already begun to conclude different things. Love is not a public thing but a private matter, however, the lady I was pictured with is truly a South African and also of a German descent but she is my friend and we took pictures. People should leave it like that. When I want to get married again, everyone would know and that is if there will be anything like that. But at the moment, the lady is just my friend.

Multiple Grammy Award-winning rapper Nelly has been arrested after a woman accused him of raping her in his tour bus. He was arrested on Saturday in Auburn, State of Washington in the northwestern part of US, according to reports. Police in Auburn said a woman called the emergency 911 just before 4:00 am local time (1100 GMT) “to report that she was sexually assaulted by a male, who is known as the rapper ‘Nelly.” After police investigated the incident, “at 4:37 AM Nelly was taken into custody and booked” at the local jail, the police statement read. The alleged assault reportedly took place on the tour bus hours after Nelly had performed at the White River Amphitheater just east of Auburn. A lawyer for Nelly vehemently denied the charges. Nelly — born Cornell Haynes Jr. — “is the victim of a completely fabricated allegation,” his attorney Scott Rosenblum told AFP in a statement. “Our initial investigation clearly establishes this allegation is devoid of credibility and is motivated by greed and vindictiveness. “I am confident, once this scurrilous accusation is thoroughly investigated, there will be no charges,” he added. According to TMZ, Nelly, whose schedule has him performing Saturday evening with country duo Florida Georgia Line in the city of Ridgefield, a two-hour drive to the south of Auburn, was booked on a charge of second-degree rape. The 42-year-old has received 12 Grammy nominations and won three Grammy awards, including for best rap solo performance in 2003. A native of Austin, Texas, he grew up in St Louis, Missouri. His first three albums, released between 2000 and 2004, were all US number ones. AFP
A contractor, who claimed to have worked for the Living Faith Church, aka Winners Chapel, Lewis Ihama, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of three pastors of the church. Ihama noted that the Rivers State Police Command had carried out investigation into the matter and found the pastors (names withheld) culpable, but wondered why the persons had yet to be arrested. He claimed that his company handled the building of the worship auditorium of the church at Ozuoba community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, adding that his payment has not been completed. Ihama noted that the pastors, who gave him the contract, had played on him and refused to pay the agreed amount. “The church, when they wanted to build the auditorium, awarded the contract to me and the pastors told me that they had agreed with the church management to pay N120 million. “I have almost completed the work, having concluded the roofing. They have only paid me N49 million and now, they are assaulting and harassing me. They also arrested me unlawfully and are threatening to kill me,” Ihama added. He stated that the police had intervened and concluded investigation into the alleged illegality by the pastors, but expressed worry that the culprits had not been arrested and arraigned in court. Ihama also lamented the delay by the police to charge the matter to court, appealing on the IGP and the State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Zaki, to direct the investigative team to arrest and arraign the clerics. In a copy of the petition obtained by our reporter, Ihama demanded full prosecution of those found guilty of the allegation. Meanwhile, when our correspondent visited the branch of the Winners Chapel, the pastors mentioned in the petition were said to have been transferred out of the place. A senior pastor at the branch, who claimed that the pastors had been transferred, declined to speak on the matter, adding that he was not in the right position to comment..
